MEMORY/COGNITIVE SUPPORT

As we age, many of us experience some form of memory deficit.  The neural network, trillions of synaptic connections that brain cells use to transmit impulse and communicate with each other, deteriorates over time.  If you ever wondered why you used to be sharp as a whip and now have trouble recalling basic information and details, it is probably due to neural network deterioration.

We are born with billions of brain cells.  Each brain cell may have up to 200,000 synaptic connections.  These connections are mostly made with dendrites and axons, the filamentous extensions of brain cells.  Our brain cells and synaptic connections decrease as we get older.

It is possible to regenerate our neural network by supporting the re-growth of axons and dendrites.  We may also improve cognitive function by increasing our neurotransmitters which transmit impulses. Improving blood flow to our brain cells and increasing neuronal glucose uptake may also enhance cognition.

To support neural network regeneration, Supplementing with Acetyl-carnitine, Acetyl-carnitine arginate, Uridine, and/or Centella asiatica (gotu kola) may be helpful.  Choline, phosphatidyl choline, and/or DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) may increase acetylcholine, a major neurotransmitter in the brain.  Huperzine A inhibits acetyl-choline esterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, thus preserving this neurotransmitter.

L-phenylalanine is a precursor to epinephrine and nor epinephrine and thus may increase these neurotransmitters.  Vinpocetine which is extracted from the herb periwinkle may increases blood perfusion and glucose uptake in brain.  Supplementing with pyroglutamic acid, a naturally occurring amino acid in the brain may also enhance cognitive function.

Another cause of memory deficit is inadequate circulatory perfusion to the brain.  This results is suboptimal delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the brain.  A commonly used botanical to address this issue is Ginkgo biloba.  Ginkgo improves brain perfusion and will thus help memory deficit which is secondary to inadequate perfusion.

Dr. Armentano uses safe and effective natural therapies without the use of drugs and surgery.  Patients can expect to have an evaluation of their health blocks and stresses, including allergy and hypersensitivity testing.  Some examples of modalities used are herbal medicine, nutritional advice, homeopathy, and other bioenergetic therapies.   This approach allows the body to heal itself naturally from  disease, illness, pain, and stress resulting in a higher state of health and wellness.  Dr. Armentano treats all health conditions in all age groups.  If you would like to arrange for an office consultation to discuss your specific health concerns, please call Dr. Armentano at 203-637-8464 or email him at drarmentano@att.net.
