DIETARY FIBER IS SO IMPORTANT TO OPTIMAL HEALTH

"Chronic diseases are much more prevalent today than they were one hundred years ago.  One significant reason is that people eat much less dietary fiber today than in the past because of food refining practices."

Michael Armentano, N.D.

Dietary fiber is critical to optimizing one's health.  The average American only consumes about 15 grams of dietary fiber per day which is less than half the optimal amount of 35 grams per day.  Most people will benefit from supplementing with fiber as they probably do not come close to consuming the recommended dietary fiber intake.  Available fiber supplements include psyllium husk, guar gum, pectin, and larch arabinogalactan.  Below are some reasons why you may want to consume an adequate amount of dietary fiber every day:

  • Dietary fiber reduces the risk of many diseases including colon cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, uterine cancer, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, obesity, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis, gallstones, and kidney stones.

  • Fiber lowers total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol.  Cholesterol synthesis is decreased in the liver and increased excretion also occurs.  Both of these mechanisms have a cholesterol lowering effect.

  • Fiber improves immune function as the production of leukocytes, T-helper cells,  antibodies are increased.

  • Fiber stabilizes blood sugar which is important for everyone, not just diabetics.

  • Fiber increases the absorption of minerals.

  • Fiber increases the healthy bacteria living in the colon such as acidophilus and bifidobacter.

  • Fiber improves the barrier function of the gut's mucosal layer by decreasing inflammation and adhesion irritants.

  • Fiber helps to normalize bowel movements (e.g.: constipation, diarrhea, loose stools, irritable bowel syndrome).
